General Information
Baptist Church History:
The first Baptist Church in the United States was independently established in Providence by Roger Williams, c.1635. Organized mission work began c.1755, and in 1814 the General Missionary Convention was formed. In 1845 it split into the American Baptist Church Missionary Union for the North, and the Southern Baptist Church Convention. In that year the slavery question divided Baptist Churches into Northern, Southern, and Colored. In 1911 the Baptist Churches joined the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, and in 1925 were organized into fourteen national groups.

1818: On the 12th day of September, delegates from the following named churches met at Poplar Springs Church, in Franklin County, and after a sermon by Isam Goss, elected Dozier Thornton, Moderator, and Isam Goss, Clerk. They then proceeded to effect a permanent organization, by enrolling the names of the delegates who were present, with letters showing their appointment by their respective churches, the association name is derived from the river, on both sides of which the churches are situated.
1886:
The Tugaloo Association embraced all of Franklin and parts of Habersham, Banks,
and Hart Counties in Georgia, as well as southern Oconee and all of Fork
Township in Anderson County except the church of Townville. The relation
continued for some fifteen years when South Union and Beaverdam in Oconee,
along with Double Springs, Andersonville, and New Prospect churches in Anderson
withdrew from their respective associations and erected themselves into the
Bethel Association. However, this organization had but a brief existence of only five
years. Union of Bethel was therefore affected, and it was thus that
Beaverdam Association came into existence.

“The roots of the BEAVERDAM Baptist Church Association reach back into the 17th century in the Baptist Church associations in Georgia and South Carolina. The first records we have of Baptist Church churches in this area tie them with the SAREPA (GA), SALUDA (Anderson County), TWELVE-MILE RIVER (Pickens County), and MOUNTAIN UNITED (?) Baptist Church Associations. The TUGALOO (GA) Baptist Church Association was formed from the SAREPTA Association in 1819, with churches located in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1851, the FORK (?) Baptist Church Association was formed of churches located between the Seneca and Tugaloo Rivers in South Carolina. However, not all the Baptist Church churches in what is now Oconee County were affiliated with the FORK Association. The NEW BETHEL Baptist Church Association was formed in 1881 of churches in the southern part of Oconee County and below the border in Anderson County. They had been in the TUGALO and SALUDA Associations. The 35th annual session of the FORK Baptist Church Association was held at the New Westminster Baptist Church September 29-October 1, 1886. And the 7th annual session of the NEW BETHEL Baptist Church Association was held at the BEAVERDAM Baptist Church at Fair Play, S. C., October 8-10, 1886. It was agreed that they would meet as one body at the New Bethel Baptist Church at Oakway, S. C., on Thursday-Saturday before the second Sunday in October, 1887 … The BEAVERDAM Baptist Church Association met for the first time on Thursday, October 6, 1887, at the New Bethel Baptist Church Oakway, South Carolina.”

Seneca River Baptist Church Association (N) (Seneca SC): 298 S Poplar St, Seneca, SC 29678, 864-882-7390, George Sloan - President at revsloan@bellsouth.net (Pastor for New Promise Land Baptist Church in Westminster)
The roots of the association date back to 3 years after the closing of the Civil War when it was part of the Rocky River Baptist Association. The first session was held at the Snow Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. J. W. Keith, moderator. In 1880, the association met with the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. This possibly was the first meeting of this organization held in Oconee County Rev. Milton Lindsay, moderator. We have no record of the official officers or the annual meeting of the association until 1901. At this time, it met at the St. Mark Baptist Church. Our records also show the years and places of meeting as follows: 1917-Golden View, 1918-St. Paul, 1923 - Ozion, 1924 - Canaan, 1930 - Shiloh, 1932 - Flat Rock, 1934 • New Foundation, 1935 - Pleasant Hill, 1936 - Choehee, 1937 - Canaan.
Seneca Institute: Begun in 1899 by J.J. Stark for the Sunday School and Baptist Church Training Union Educational Convention of the Seneca River Baptist Church Association. By 1915 there were two large buildings on a twenty acre campus and in 1929 the number had grown to eight. At one time this was the only High School available for Blacks in the area. The name was changed to Seneca Junior College in 1926 and it closed in 1939. The buildings were razed in 1963. In 1978 the Seneca Institute Family Life Center was constructed on the old school site by the Seneca River Baptist Church Association. A small log house to the right of the Family Life Center is the only remaining school structure.
